It's nothing new for a wedding planner to be telling you how to handle it if it rains on your wedding day, but I wanted to tell you a few little known facts that may help you keep your cool if the heavens open on your big day.
First, I want to preface this by saying that my busiest season as a wedding coordinator was 2023 which also happened to be the wettest summer on record here in the UK so that's the qualification I will use to tell you I promise, it will all be OK!
Secondly, this blog is less about telling you it's going to be OK (because deep down you already know that!) and more about giving you facts and solutions you may not know or have thought of before now.
Such as; did you know it is supposedly good luck for it to rain on your wedding day because back when part of a wedding ceremony was the tying of a knot this was usually done with twine and when a twine knot gets wet it becomes stronger, if almost impossible to break, therefore you were said to have had a stronger bond if it rained on your wedding day.
Did you also know that registrars here in England are allergic to the rain? OK this one's only a half truth but some registrars will refuse to perform a ceremony outdoors if it's raining. It truly depends on who you get and you won't know this until the day of so if you are having your legal weddings and wish for it to take place outside, make sure to ask the registry office when you go to give notice or have your pre-marital interviews, what their policy is and how strict they are on it. (Argument 165 for celebrant led weddings!)
Weddings, whatever the weather, are enjoyed the most when you are present and my top tip is always to embrace the rain but it's also perfectly fine if you're just not a rainy day kind of person! Talk with your photographer and your venue about where the best inside shots can be taken and talk to your coordinator about how you can go about this.
The worst thing you can do is to bury your head in the sand and not have a plan for wet weather, trust me when it comes to the day, if it's raining and you don't have a plan, that's when the panic will set in. It's always best to have at least a rough outline of what you would want to happen so that decisions aren't being made for you in the heat of the moment.
So whatever "embracing it" looks like to you - go for a run with your photographer, use the back up umbrellas or stay inside and take portraits instead - come rain or shine your day will be awesome because it's your day but plan ahead and you'll enjoy it just that bit more!
If you think you need to talk to someone about your wet weather plans then feel free to get in touch with me today!
